Steamatic Geelong was engaged to assist a region's only supermarket following a significant storm event that left the store unable to operate. Given the supermarket's critical role in providing essential goods to the local community, timely restoration was imperative.

The Challenges

The Storm impacted the store in two significant ways: stormwater ingress and a loss of power. The building and the stock required immediate attention as part of Steamatic's efforts to restore the store's operations. The project demanded a rapid and efficient solution to minimise downtime.

  • Power Outage: The storm caused a power outage that could not be immediately restored. This resulted in the loss of refrigerated stock and further complications in drying the building which was essential to prevent further damage.

  • Critical Facility: As the only supermarket in the region, the closure significantly affected the community's access to essential goods, intensifying the urgency of the restoration.

  • Stock Damage: A large portion of the store's stock was compromised during the storm and could no longer be sold. The lost stock had t be disposed of quickly.

  • Building Damage: The store's building also sustained water damage that required immediate remediation.

The Solutions

Steamatic Geelong developed a comprehensive response plan to overcome these challenges.

  • Power Supply via a Generator: A generator was brought in to restore temporary power, enabling restoration work to commence without delay.

  • Installation of Specialised Drying Equipment: Large-scale desiccant dehumidifiers were installed due to the size of the facility, ensuring effective drying.

  • Stock Disposal Management: Careful coordination with store management ensured the timely inventory disposal of damaged stock and facilitated cleaning efforts to prepare the store for reopening.

  • Deployment of an expert team: Accredited Assessment Managers and IICRC-certified technicians were dispatched to the site to manage and execute the restoration work.

The Outcome

The storm event occurred on a Sunday evening, and thanks to the coordinated efforts of all involved, the store re-opened the following weekend. This rapid response significantly minimised business disruption and restored the community's access to an essential service.
