A fire incident impacted Geelong Orthopaedics when flames originating outside the premises spread into the building, causing significant damage to the rear workshop and adjoining rooms.

The Challenges

During the initial site inspection, medium to heavy soot fallout and smoke damage were observed throughout the rear section of the property. One of the key concerns was a Kiln Oven, an essential piece of equipment used daily to create customised foot moulds for patients. Replacement options for this oven were both costly and difficult to source quickly, making its restoration a priority for the insured and the loss adjuster.

The Solutions

Steamatic’s Senior Operations Manager led the restoration of the Kiln Oven. The approach included:

  • Stripping the oven into its individual panels and components.

  • Employing a combination of laser cleaning, dry ice blasting, and manual techniques to remove charring, soot, and smoke contamination.

  • Repainting the edging and framework with heatproof paint to restore a near-new finish.

  • Partnering with a local electronics specialist to replace damaged circuit boards and power connections.

The oven was then reassembled, tested, and confirmed as fully operational.

The Outcomes

The Kiln Oven was successfully restored and returned to the insured in excellent working order. By refurbishing rather than replacing, Steamatic minimised downtime, avoided significant costs, and ensured Geelong Orthopaedics could continue providing uninterrupted patient care.
